There’s a fresh new face coming to Shetland and taking over as lead detective, and you may already be familiar with her work. Ashley Jensen, also known as the one and only Agatha Raisin, stars in the new season of the acclaimed British crime drama, coming to VisionTV Tuesdays at 9pm ET/6pm PT starting April 9!

While Douglas Henshall, who played the intelligent and steadfast DI Jimmy Perez for nine seasons, announced he was departing the series, Shetland fans bid him a reluctantly fond farewell and looked toward welcoming a new detective into the mix. Ashley Jensen, well known to VisionTV audiences for playing Agatha Raisin in the beloved crime comedy-drama, will be taking on a more serious role than the loveable Agatha as she steps into the murky, murderous world of Shetland.

Jensen plays DI Ruth Calder who returns to her hometown on the Shetland Islands after 30 years spent away. While stationed in London, Detective Calder is sent back to retrieve a vulnerable witness in a gangland murder investigation and will have to work with local police forces to get the job done. Of course, returning to hometown is more complicated for the detective as it means revisiting many troubling ghosts from her past.

While Jensen’s character is described as “sometimes snippy, frustrated, defensive and not that nice,” Jensen is looking forward to this next chapter in the series and ushering in this new character to the Shetland world.

“There will be a different dynamic with Ruth amongst the regular characters and a few more new interesting characters to enjoy,” says Jensen.” However the integrity of the show and the world that has been created will remain very much in the same tone as the last seven seasons.”

A fraught partnership emerges between Calder and Alison “Tosh” MacIntosh, played by Alison O’Donnell, who is now in charge in Lerwick following Perez’ exit at the end of last season. Tosh is also in the middle of investigating a string of animal mutilations and must pause her investigation to help Calder, who operates a little differently than Tosh is used to.

“It’s lovely that it’s two women leading the show,” Jensen told Radio Times. “Of course, there will be people who miss Dougie [Henshall] because he was great, but with new directors and a new lead writer, Shetland has kept everything that’s wonderful about it but it’s somehow amplified.”

“It’s a real privilege to be asked to lead this show into a new chapter.”

Enjoy the newest season of Shetland featuring its new leading lady Tuesdays at 9pm ET starting April 9.
