Cilla Black Statue

It is one thing for a musician to be remembered through his or her music, but it’s something else all together when a statue is erected to salute a voice that touched so many.

On January 16, a one-and-a-fifth times life-sized bronze statue (6’6” tall, weighing 130kg) of Cilla Black was unveiled outside of the original entrance of Liverpool’s Cavern Club. As you may recall, this is the venue in which Black served as a cloakroom attendant before taking its stage and launching her international singing career.

“Cilla” airs Tuesdays (February 28 through March 14) at 8pm ET/5pm PT on VisionTV!

Created by Emma Rodgers and Andy Edwards, the statue depicts Black with her arms enthusiastically raised in the air and a big smile upon her face. Meanwhile, the patterned dress depicts memorable moments from the singer’s life. Fittingly, the base of the statue is designed to look like Black’s “You’re My World” record.

“It’s so fitting that Cilla will be celebrated alongside a place that played such a pivotal role in her career, as the Cavern did in the careers of many other bands and singers,” commented Black’s son Robert Willis.

In fact, it was Willis and his brothers who funded the statue’s creation as a “thank you” to the Liverpool residents who sent an outpouring of love the family’s way, following Black’s death in 2015.

More about the captivating “Cilla” miniseries: 1960s Liverpool saw the birth of a revolution that would change music forever. It’s the world Priscilla White grew up in, a world where working class girls became secretaries until getting married and having kids. But ‘Cilla’ dreamed of more, and with talent and determination she rose to become an international star and national sweetheart. BAFTA Award winner Sheridan Smith (Mrs Biggs: The Widower) stars as Cilla Black, the innocent, young Liverpudlian songbird struggling to make her voice heard. Her remarkable story details her friendship with a young group called The Beatles and her struggle to hold onto her dreams whilst torn between the two men in her life – manager Brian Epstein and long term love, Bobby.
