Welcome to this week’s “Home Fires” Burning Question! Before reading and participating in the poll, do note that there are many spoilers ahead. This episode of Home Fires is available to watch online through Thursday, March 25, 2016.

As World War II rages on, those in Great Paxford are adapting to life in a time of conflict. One of the primary concerns from the Women’s Institute’s (W.I.) point of view is having an air raid shelter available to the village’s residents.

With Frances (Samantha Bond) at the helm of the W.I., she’s very aware that one of the primary obstacles to getting such a facility constructed is her nemesis – and former W.I. leader – Joyce (Francesca Annis). Thus, Frances enacts a plan to throw Joyce off the scent.

Simple, yet affective, Frances, with the help of Claire (Daisy Badger), leads Joyce to believe that a local church is one of the places in which the W.I. would like to convert into a shelter. Of course, this gets Joyce stirred up and sends her off on a mission to try and thwart Frances’ well-intentioned efforts.

When Joyce bumps into Frances on the street, she has blueprints in-hand and smugness on her face. In this moment, she expects to get the best of Frances. Unfortunately for Joyce, she read the situation very wrong.

   

Joyce: “Are you aware that an official air raid shelter is already being planned?”

Frances: “I wasn’t. Official in what way?”

Joyce: “A local architect has been commissioned by my husband and the blueprints arrived this morning. Thought you might want to see the difference between a professional and a cobbled, amateur affair.”

Frances: “Oh, this is very impressive. It’s just a shame we won’t be needing it.”

With a puzzled look upon her face, Joyce receives word from Frances that a shelter is already in the works and close to completion. Where will it be? In the spacious, underground cellar located within Frances’ home. Thus, Joyce’s attempt to take over (and perhaps thwart) the process of having a shelter built has been stopped at the door.

   

As Frances finishes patronizing Joyce, she exits with great satisfaction upon her face. Joyce, meanwhile is left holding the bag – or in this case, a useless blueprint. She looks at a loss for words, if not a bit humiliated.

However, one can’t believe that Joyce will take this defeat in stride. Surely, she will attempt to exact some revenge. With that in mind, how do you think Joyce will get back at Frances for sneakily getting a shelter built?
